Terms and conditions
The basis on which we publish listings, events and advertising — including, importantly, what a listing does not mean.
Draft for review. This policy describes accurately what this website does today, but it has not been checked by a solicitor. Have it reviewed before the site goes live, and add your registered business details, your ICO registration if you need one, and your governing-law clause.
1. About these terms
These terms apply to everyone who uses this website, and to businesses and organisations that submit listings, events or advertising to Oxfordshire Monthly.
2. What a listing is, and is not
This is a directory. A listing means that a business asked to be listed and that we accepted the entry.
A listing is not a recommendation. We do not inspect premises, check qualifications, verify insurance or test workmanship. We do not publish reviews, star ratings or testimonials, and we do not describe any business as vetted, approved or endorsed.
What the labels on a listing mean
Some listings carry a label. Each one is a statement of fact about the listing, and none of them is a recommendation:
- Not yet checked — the details were compiled from information we hold and have not been confirmed with the business. Most listings start here.
- Details checked — somebody at the magazine went through the contact details with the business on the date shown. It means the telephone number and address were right on that date. It says nothing about the quality, competence, insurance or qualifications of the business.
- Managed by the business — the business has claimed the listing and maintains it. We checked that the person claiming it was connected to the business before handing it over, but we do not check what they then write.
- Featured listing — the business pays for prominence. We label every paid placement, and paying does not change where a business appears in ordinary search results.
Where a listing shows when it was last looked at, that date is when somebody last opened the record — not a guarantee that everything on it is still correct.
Details on a listing are supplied by the business. We make a reasonable effort to spot obvious errors, but we cannot guarantee that any detail is accurate or current. Always check anything that matters — price, qualifications, insurance, opening hours — with the business directly before you commit.
Any contract you enter into with a business you found here is between you and that business. We are not a party to it.
3. Telling us something is wrong, and asking to be removed
If something on a listing is wrong, tell us using the "Report a problem" link on the listing itself, or write to us. We read every report. Where a correction is warranted we make it, and we never charge a business to have its details put right.
A business may ask to be removed from the directory at any time, and we will remove it. You do not need to give a reason, and we will not ask you to buy anything first. Use the same link, choose "Please remove this listing", and tell us you are connected to the business. We may contact you using the details already published for the business to confirm the request is genuine, which protects you from somebody else having your listing taken down.
We may also remove or decline a listing on our own initiative — for example where we believe it to be inaccurate, misleading or unlawful.
4. Where listing information comes from
Listings reach this directory in four ways: a business submits one, we enter one ourselves, a business claims and then maintains one, or we compile one from information we hold. Each listing says which of these applies to it.
Information compiled by us has not been confirmed with the business, and may be out of date. If you are that business and would rather we held nothing, see the section above.
5. Events
Event details come from the organiser. Dates, times and prices change, and events are cancelled. Please check with the organiser before travelling, particularly for anything ticketed or far away.
Submitted events are held until a person has approved them. We may edit an entry for length, clarity or house style, and we may decline an event without giving a reason.
6. Submitting a listing or an event
When you submit something you confirm that:
- you are the business or organisation concerned, or are authorised to act for it;
- the details are accurate;
- you own the rights in any text, logo or photograph you send us, or have permission to use it, and you allow us to publish it on this website and in the magazine;
- the content is lawful and does not mislead.
We may edit, suspend or remove any listing or event, with or without notice, and we may refuse a submission.
7. Claiming a listing
Claims are verified before control of a listing is transferred. Confirming an email address is only the first step; a person then checks the claim, and we may telephone the number already published for the business. We may refuse a claim where we are not satisfied, and we may reverse a transfer if we later find a claim was not genuine.
8. Advertising
Prices shown on the advertising page are proposed introductory prices, not a binding offer. We will confirm the price in writing before anything is agreed. Any sum shown excludes VAT unless we say otherwise.
- Paid placements are labelled as sponsored or featured, online and in print.
- Paying us does not change where a business appears in ordinary search results.
- Sponsored articles are clearly marked as paid features and are written in partnership with the advertiser. Editorial judgement on everything else stays with us.
- We can decline or withdraw advertising that we do not consider suitable for our readers, or that we believe to be misleading.
- Recurring listings continue until cancelled. Either side may cancel with one month's notice, taking effect at the end of the current paid period. We do not refund part-months.
- Invoices are payable within 14 days unless agreed otherwise. We may suspend a paid listing while an invoice is overdue.
Advertisers are responsible for the accuracy and legality of their own advertising, including any claim, price or guarantee it contains.
9. Using this website
You may use this site to find businesses and events, and you may link to any page on it. You may not:
- copy the directory in whole or substantial part, or scrape it systematically;
- use the contact details published here to send unsolicited marketing;
- submit false listings, claims or events;
- attempt to interfere with the site or gain access to the administration area.
10. Our liability
We provide this website with reasonable care but without any warranty that it will be uninterrupted or error-free. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss arising from your dealings with a business or organisation listed here, or from any inaccuracy in information supplied to us by a third party.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. Nothing here affects the statutory rights of a consumer.
11. Intellectual property
The design, text and arrangement of this website belong to Oxfordshire Monthly. Logos and photographs supplied by businesses remain theirs.
12. Changes and contact
We may change these terms; the current version is always the one on this page. For anything about them, write to hello@oxfordshiremonthly.co.uk.
